Methods of Water PurificationWater is essential to life. Without water, everything as we know it would wither and die. Just as important as water is to human life, the purification of this water is equally important. Invest in a water purification system that works efficiently in your home to bring the clean and fresh water you and your family needs. With that being said, there are some situations where clean water is not easily accessible. Whether this is while out in the wilderness or during an emergency, it is important to know how you will get clean water during this critical time. Become familiar with the different means of water purification, and how you can gain access to this in your time of need.

Purification Tablets

These small tablets can be purchased at any sporting goods store, and will work to kill the bacteria from your water. The most common type of purification tablets are made of iodine or chlorine. To get the best results, the water you are purifying should be close to 70 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. Even with all the advantages of purification tablets, there are some people who should be cautious consuming them. Make sure if you are pregnant or have thyroid problems to talk with a doctor beforehand to make sure it is safe for your use.

Boiling

Boiling the water is the most basic and simple way to purify your water when you have a source of heat. Put a pot of water on the stove or over a campfire and turn up the heat. Make sure the water comes to a rolling boil for the bacteria and other organisms to be killed before consuming. The water should be at a hard rolling boil for at least three minutes to be properly purified. Let the water sit and cool down for a bit before you drink it. This means of purification will not remove any dirt, twigs, or other objects from where you may have removed the water so be aware of this beforehand.

Ultraviolet Light

For years now water treatment facilities from all around have used ultraviolet radiation in the process of water purification. This method will kill bacteria and other pathogens from the water source. While these have been used in these large facilities, there are small and portable ultraviolet lights that can be used in the same way in the home or in the wilderness. These are placed into a bottle for a few minutes, killing the microorganisms present.

While purified water straight from your superior water filter will be the best option, there are other means of purifying water in emergency situations. Make sure to follow these tactics to get the cleanest water possible, avoiding violent illness from bacteria and other dangerous pathogens.
